Beach Volleyball Terms

If you have ever watched a match of beach volleyball you have probably been very confused about some of the terms they use for certain plays.  I will try to give you a run-down about beach volleyball terms in this article.

In beach volleyball you have the pass (also known as a bump), the set and hit (also known as the attack or spike).  But there are many other words that you may hear when watching volleyball.  Some other words for the hit are a kill, hammer, spike-town, bury the ball, bang and the list goes on. 

The set is another part of the game that has many different terms.  If someone sets the ball well, they are said to have “good hands”.  A good set is known as butter or nectar. 

The block is also known by many other names such as a roof, stuff, phone booth, house or any other enclosure you can think of.

When someone digs a ball with one hand it’s called a spear and when two people from opposing teams both contact the ball at the same time above the net it’s called a joust.  A Miss-hit is called a paintbrush and when someone hits the ball right on the boundary line they are known as a sniper.

When the hitter is going up to attack the ball they can either hit line, which is straight or angle which across the court diagonally.  A high arch shot to the back court is known as a jumbo shrimp or rainbow.  Now you know a little bit of the volleyball terms you hear.
